DIMINUTIVES AND SUPERLATIVES
Diminutives are a group of letters that are added to a word to indicate smallness.
The general rule is if a word ends in o – take off the o and add ito.
E.g gato is cat and gatito is kitten or little cat.
The general rule is if a word ends in a – take off the a and add ita.
E.g casa is house and casita is little house.
Please note that sometimes the ito/ita at the end of a word has no meaning at all and is a colloquial way of showing affection.
E.g. Hola guapito. Hi handsome.
Superlatives can be indicated by completely replacing the word. However in this instance it is shown by adding a group of letters to the end of the word.
The general rule is if a word ends in o – take off the o and add ísimo.
E.g guapo – handsome. Guapísimo – really handsome.
The general rule is if a word ends in a – take off the a and add ísima.
E.g guapa – handsome. Guapísima – really handsome.
