ACCENTS / TILDES

 

Accents or Tildes as they are called in Spanish are used for different reasons..  They are used to indicate which part of the spoken word is stressed.  They can also help to show if something is a statement, a question, or an exclamation.  

 

AGUDA

Aguda words have their strongest syllable or sílaba tónica in the last syllable.

The word will end in a vowel, n or s.  E.g. japonés – ja-po-nés

 

LLANA

Llana words have their strongest syllable or sílaba tónica in the second-last syllable.  

They will have an accent in the second last syllable they will not end in a vowel, n or s.  E.g. fácil.

 

ESDRÚJULA

Esdrújula words have their strongest syllable or sílaba tónica in the third last syllable.  These words will have an accent.

 

SOBREESDRÚJULA

Sobreesdrújula words have their strongest syllable or sílaba tónica in the fourth last syllable.  These words will have an accent.
